Programme Information

What is the purpose of the research?

The New Real is a group and programme that connects the arts, sciences and society. Its research explores how AI impacts on life at a profound level, often interacting with us in fascinating and unanticipated ways, and illuminates how emerging technology can become a creative, playful and deeply impactful part of everyday living. The New Real devises imaginative ways to experiment with new experiences, practices, infrastructures and business models, and empowers people to be agents of positive change.

The New Real supports the cultural sector to both delight audiences and develop critical literacies by equipping cultural producers and audiences with the knowledge and tools to navigate the ways systems make use of data and how truth and experience are constructed online. To do so it is developing and researching a complete ‘experiential AI’ system for artists and climate advocates. The system integrates data streams and forecasting pipelines for selected climate features, combined with AI processing engines to manipulate images, words, sounds and numbers. This enables the artists to expose the operation of a machine learning algorithm, and explore the link between global-scale data and what we call “ground truth” or reality.

The New Real programme carries out research through Resilience in the New Real & The New Real Observatory projects. Resilience in the New Real is funded by Arts and Humanities Research Council. The New Real Observatory is funded by the Alan Turing Institute’s “Towards Turing 2.0” Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council grant.
